Travel the Top Ten Honeymoon Destinations of 2013

There are many things to consider when deciding where you want to spend your honeymoon. My best friend had asked me to help her and her soon to be hubby to be about a few good choices for their honeymoon destination. Without giving too much personal information, I put this same question out to my experienced travel advisors at Largay Travel. Budget, time of year and their personal styles should be considered, I came up with a general list of Largay's favorites and our first "Top Ten List."
When planning your honeymoon consider that the Caribbean and Pacific have a hurricane season that is active June thru November. And with global warming resulting in some of our biggest storms in October and November in the past few years. With that in mind, if you cannot/will not change your wedding date and still want to plan a romantic beachside honeymoon post reception, we recommend adding insurance to your trip. Some of our suppliers like Travel Impressions, offer a good insurance that will allow you to reschedule your entire trip for any reason including acts of God and you can always add insurance on to your trip with companies like TravelEx who offer a variety of coverage. SO important to add insurance!

Runners up and US favorites: Twin Farms in Vermont, Napa in California, and an adventure trip in the Pacific Northwest
Other Runners up and favorites: Paris, Maldives, Thailand, Costa Rica and Belize

Number Ten: Telluride, Colorado
We love the Virtuoso property, Hotel Madeline. Surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks, this resort exudes intimate elegance in the Colorado high country. The Lovers' Journey at the spa offers couples more than two hours of side-by-side body scrubs and massages, a private steam chamber and sparkling wine and chocolate. Of course you can enjoy the seasonal activities on Telluride's renowned slopes, amazing hiking, fly fishing or Jeep tours through the mountains. At night check out one of Tellurides famous festivals or Hotel Madeline's signature restaurant, Rev.

"Personally, I am a fan of choosing a honeymoon based on your shared interests.  Jeff and I love movies, and so for our honeymoon we went to the Telluride Film Festival.  We married in May (10 years ago this month!) and the festival is every Labor Day weekend in Telluride, so it doesn't always have to be that you have the ceremony, then immediately depart for the honeymoon!  We're going back this year for our 10th anniversary," Michelle Glosson, Travel Advisor michelle@largaytravel.com

Best Time of Year: Winter for ski season and Summer for festivals, biking and hiking

Number Nine: Bermuda
This is where my parents met and honeymooned and  We also had two of our best family vacations here. Bermuda's pink sands, high tea, colorful buildings and rum swizzles are part of it famous charm. I recommend taking a cruise destination to this destination but I have enjoyed Bermuda cruising and flying and staying at one of their classy hotels and resorts.

"The weather is mild year round and is glorious in summer. It is just a 2-hour flight from the East Coast and a wonderful destination combining glorious beaches, interesting sightseeing options and lots of activities. It has a great selection of luxury, romantic accommodations and has been a traditional honeymoon destination for years," Trisha Iannazzi, Certified Travel Counselor, Master Cruise Counselor, Destination Specialist, IANNAZZI ENTERPRISESIndependent affiliate of Largay Travel travel@iedestinations.com

Best Time of Year: Summer

Number Eight: Hawaii

"I would have to say the beautiful islands of Hawaii are very popular with honeymooners. They do not have to be concerned about getting a passport and can still be in a exotic destination
For those who like to island hop Maui, Kaui and the Big Island can make for a perfect honeymoon. Having visited Hawaii a few times I feel like some parts of Hawaii are where heaven and earth meet," Honey Mistry, Travel Advisor

My personal favorite resort is Four Seasons Maui at Wailea. You can never go wrong with a Four Seasons Resort! Wailea offers an adults-only Serenity Pool and you can upgrade to club level rooms with top-floor views and a private lounge which is a great spot for hors d'oeuvres or after-dinner drinks. Between beaches, hiking, golf  yoga, island inspired spa treatments and even whale watching excursions, Hawaii is a honeymoon destination you will never forget.

Best Time of Year: Year Round, Summer and Holidays are most popular

Number Seven: St Lucia
"I would pick Ladera in St. Lucia because of the gorgeous view of the lush pitons.  The food is excellent and the room has it's own plunge pool and only 3 walls so you get a romantic breeze each night.  Very private too," Julie Harris, Solis Escapes, Independent affiliate of Largay Travel Julie@largaytravel.com

While still gorgeous view, St. Lucia has a rockier beach so the all inclusive resorts seem to be the way to go here. The honeymoon and destination wedding expert in the office, Amanda Cerrato, told me the all inclusive resorts at Sandals has are well priced and romantic. Her favorite is Sandals Grande St Lucian but in St. Lucia you can use the facilities at all three Sandals resorts without any extra charges. They're private beaches, pools, food and drinks are available to you no matter which resort you have a room.

Best Time of Year: Year Round,

Number Six: Turks & Caicos
One of the most traveled islands in the Caribbean in the past ten years, there is no surprise that Turks made our top ten list. "For your friends, I would recommend the Caribbean. Amanyara in Turks is beautiful and they are running a great promotion which I can forward you. Highly recommend it!" Honey Mistry, Travel Advisor honey@largaytravel.com

Amanyara is a luxury resort that can easily be missed driving by. Its low-lying rooflines, timber pavilions that feature private pools overlooking the stretch of Caribbean blue sea. Your pavillion will feature retractable sides to welcome the outdoors as well as terraces with a sunken table surrounded by cushions for cozy and private dining. The Spa Villa offers yoga as well as Watsu treatments. Do you scuba?! You must try some scuba diving around the wreck of the Endymion, an 18th century British warship or check out one of the worlds longest coral reefs!

Best Time of Year: Year Round

Number Five: The Greek Isles
Rounding off our top five is a magical destination pick with a concept of cruising that you will both love for a honeymoon, anniversary or couples vacation.

"The SeaDream Yacht thru the Greek Isles - This 100 passenger / 100 crew motor yacht offers honeymooners a laid back, five star cruising experience.  With Balinese Beds on the deck for sunning and a sports deck off the back for water sports, this ship is sure to offer an amazing honeymoon experience.  The country club casual attire and gourmet food and wine will allow the couple to relax in the lap of luxury and the all-inclusive pricing gives them peace-of-mind as they sail the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea," Amanda Klimak, Vice President and Travel Advisor, Largay Travel

Best Time of Year: Spring

Number Four: Riviera Maya, Mexico
One of the most popular destinations to visit in the world because of its the beautiful beaches and cities is Mexico. You think of Mexico, you may think of Cancun or Acapulco as spring break hot spots and think that you are too old for what Mexico has to offer. Each destination in Mexico is a little different , but there were two top choices almost every advisor choose for honeymoon spots. Cabo San Lucas (Pacific side) and Riviera Maya (Caribbean side) are our Mexican honeymoon picks. Cabo San Lucas is known as Jennifer Aniston's favorite place to escape in the world! We tend to see the destination wedding market going toward the all inclusive resorts in CAbo.  And Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen), though close to Cancun, truly offers luxury and five-star resort living with a grown up nightlife.

Vivian Leonard recommends Maroma Resort and Spa because of it is adults only and all inclusive. This Virtuoso property offers our honeymooners fresh flowers and a 30-minute massage for two on their private terraces. Check out the resorts handpainted tile work and Mexican cuisine at El Sol or go explore the Yucatan jungle and vibrant coral reefs.

Best Time of Year: Year Round, Winter and late Spring are best

Number Three: Italy
A favorite on everyones list of destinations or at least on everyones bucket list, Italy is an easy number three to our honeymoon destinations. Take a romantic gondola ride in Venice or reenact the Lady and the Tramp spaghetti scene in Sicily.
"I can't think of anything more romantic than spending several weeks in Italy on a honeymoon. Starting in Lake Como, spending a week at a villa in Tuscany immersing yourself in this region, and then heading on down to the Amalfi Coast, (drumroll) A stay at Casa Angelina in Praiano, a sleepy village on the Amalfi Coast," Kathy Moran, Travel Advisor, Largay Travel kathymoran@kmorantravel.com
If you take Kathy's word I would recommend Forbes Magazine and Virtuoso's Best of the Best Villa D'esta in Lake Como, Italy. A favorite amoung international celebrities and royalty.

Best Time of Year: Spring

Number Two: Bora Bora/Tahiti
Pictured above, if you haven't seen images of Bora Bora and Tahiti then you have been missing some of the most amazing resorts in the world. From the Four Seasons to the St. Regis these French Polynesian islands feature your own private bunglow stand above turquoise waters and some even offer their own private plunge pools. The French Polynesian is recommended by more than half of the Travel Advisors at Largay Travel as a perfect honeymoon location.

Best Time of Year: Year Round

Finally, in the Largay Way tradition of predominant adventure-travel lovers, our number one was no surprise...

Number One: African Safari
"A South African Safari including a stay at Ulusaba and a visit of the wine country near Capetown," says Amanda Klimak

"Africa - the most romantic!" Gail Rosenberg, Travel Advisor, Largay Travel

Ken Sauce says a safari to Tanzania or Morracco are great exotic honeymoon picks. Honey Mistry also loves the idea of an African Safari.

There are so many great tour companies in Africa for your Safari experience. We love Micato Safari and so does Travel and Leisure, nine times! Micato says there is nothing more romantic than a safari and together with a idyllic beach bungalow this is the most romantic honeymoon on earth. Watching the sunset over the eternal savannah. Two chairs and a silver ice bucket of champagne. Specs of light coming thru the canopy and a faded pink sunsetting as more champagne flows. And that's just your first night! Continue with a game searh where you will see herds of animals all over the African landscape. Next, over to the Indian Ocean where you can walk the desserted stretches of beach, snokle reefs and head back to your resort barefoot for a couples massage.

Best Time of Year: ANYTIME
